Kids Coats

Nkwantakese Habitat Village, Ghana,

Ashanti Region, West Africa - Spring 2007

*click pictures to enlarge

These photos (sent from Ghana, with grateful thanks), show the distribution of worm medication, sponsored by CUMC, for the infants and children in the village.  This is a serious problem in this part of Ghana as children get the parasite through the soil and it then spreads from child to child.  Consistent medication (3-4 times per year, tablets for children and liquid for infants) is necessary.

Kids Coats
November 1, 2008 8:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Family Life Center at CUMC.
In 2007 we distributed over 2000 coats to kids in need. Our goal for 2008 is 4,000 coats.
We also distribute hats, gloves/mittens and boots.
You can help by holding a coat drive at your work, in your neighborhood or maybe just in your own closets!
Use this packet to help you with your coat drive:

Boxes for donation can be found in the church entrance by the Family Life Center and in the donation hallway by the office.

FOOD PANTRY

The Food Pantry is our long standing ministry to the hungry.  Each month, we serve an average of 150 families providing each three bags of food and nonfood products. In 2007, a total of 3,276 bags of food were given to 4,142 people.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Any person in need will be helped. The only qualifications are that you must be a resident of Hamilton County and that we ask families to limit their visits to once per month. No financial questions are asked.

WHEN:  Monday 3-5 pm
           Wednesday & Thursday 9am- 1pm
           Saturday 10 am - noon

DONATIONS:  Our Food Pantry is supported by donations of food and monetary gifts. Donations may be delivered any time and left at the church in the donation center.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:  First we ask for prayers for those who are hungry and for the church as we minister to those in need. Second, we ask for you to support this ministry by making a monetary donation, making a food donation, or volunteering your time. For more information, please call Marty Hurst.

ITEMS THE PANTRY NEEDS:  The Pantry is in need of cereal, juice, paper products, personal products and crackers.

HOMELESS: Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)

IHN, the Interfaith Hospitality Network, is a national network on churches sharing a common goal of providing temporary shelter and meals to homeless families with children.  In 1994, Indianapolis and Carmel United Methodist Church joined the national IHN program.  Carmel United Methodist Church continues as one of 40 churches now involved locally.

*HOW YOU CAN SERVE:  Individuals of the community of CUMC commit a few hours in an effort to enable our guests to have a secure place to spend their nights as they work to reach their goals.  We need about 80 volunteers for each week we host to help with...

Our hosting weeks for 2008 are:

    August 24 and November 16.

Click here to obtain more information about IHN.

During the past 10 years we have hosted up to 15 guests for a week at a time, four times a year.  These guests are families, who have made a commitment to permanently change their lives.  Their goal is to move toward self-sufficiency through jobs, housing, and transportation.

WHAT DO WE DO TO HELP:  Each day that our guests are with us, our volunteers deliver our guests to the church by van each evening at 5:30 pm and then return them to the Day Facility at 7:00 am the next day. At the Day Facility families receive assistance with preparing resumes and job applications, and also spend time seeking interviews. They also make application for housing and receive guidance and counseling in special needs such as extending their education. On arriving at our church for the evening, families enjoy a wholesome dinner together. Planned activities are made available for children after dinner while parents prepare lunches for the next day.  A volunteer arrives to stay with the guests overnight.  Each family has their own room with linens and toiletries provided. Beds have traveled to our church and will move on to the next church at the end of the week.

FOR INFORMATION:  Please contact Marcilynn Keys at 848-6043 or marcilynn(at)indy.rr.com. Note: Use @ where you see (at). We welcome your calls seeking information and hope you will consider being part of this mission. WE ALWAYS NEED NEW VOLUNTEERS and hope those who have served as well as new volunteers will WATCH FOR IHN SUNDAY SIGNUP.

Soup Kitchen (Soup's On)

Soup's On is a Sunday lunch ministry at Roberts Park United Methodist Church in the heart and soul of downtown Indianapolis. This ministry reaches the poor and hungry, feeding approximately 225 person each Sunday for lunch.

CUMC CONNECTION:  We are soliciting volunteers who would be able to form a “CUMC Group” to assist Roberts Park UMC with "Soup’s On." We are looking for volunteers who could be counted on to regularly plan, buy, prepare, and serve a Sunday lunch. Depending upon the number of volunteers, our group might serve as infrequently as quarterly, or as frequently as monthly. We need people who can prepare the meals on Saturday, as well as people who can serve the meals on Sunday. Your culinary skill level is not important. Children are welcome to participate, making this an ideal “Family” activity, teaching them how to lovingly serve God and his people. Please consider participating in this ministry of caring. For more information, contact Jim Bach 848-4993 or jamesbach(at)indy.rr.com.

FOR INFORMATION:  If you would like to help serve individually please contact Rosie Wenzlaff at Roberts Park UMC (271-2982).

August 2008 Loose Coin Offerings -Each month, the Sunday loose coin offerings collected at CUMC are designated for a specific mission of the month.

In August, our loose coin offering will support Operation Classroom and Operation Doctor. Operation Classroom provides quality education, health care, mental health care and refugee support in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Operation Doctor is an offshoot that provides medical support of a women's medical/health clinic in Freetown, Sierra Leone. A CUMC work team will be going there this fall.

Box Top & Soup Label Collection

Save your food labels for Red Bird Mission! CUMC is one of many United Methodist churches that are collecting Campbell's Soup Labels ("Labels for Education") that the Red Bird Mission (Appalachia, KY) can use to redeem for a passenger van or other needed equipment. Our church is also collecting box tops from General Mills products ("Boxtops for Education") that are also redeemed by Red Bird Mission for educational materials. Collection boxes for Campbell's Soup Labels and General Mills box tops are located in three areas: Narthex, Church Office, and coat rack next to the church office.
