What is the 'We Care' Committee?
We are formally known as the Casserole Committee, and we have updated ourselves and grown to be more than just casseroles!  We are a group of women volunteers who are willing to make a phone call to check on a member in need of support, typically someone just out of the hospital.  And maybe we'll make & deliver food, or send gift cards, or more, to show 'We Care'.

What is the primary purpose?
Simply, members supporting members.  Members showing members that 'We Care', we're here for you.

How does it work?
Karen McTaggart in the office e-mails Julie Kingston names of persons in need of support.  Julie calls the person or assigns a volunteer to call them.  When we call we ask them how they are doing, and what can we do to help, such as deliver muffins, a meal, send a gift card, offer our prayers, or ???  We also send everyone a card with a personal message.

Who is contacted?
Any member in need of support, such as those who have been seriously ill, recently out of the hospital (surgery), new mothers, those who have lost a loved one, those overwhelmed and in need of a pick-me-up, the homebound person-of-the-week, etc.

How does the church obtain all of the names to contact?
We don't get all, but we try!  The CUMC office calls all of the area hospitals very regularly to check for names, and often members tell us of other members.  Please let us know if you know of any person or family in need of our support.

How do I volunteer?
Call or e-mail Julie Kingston  571-1728  juliekingston5@gmail.com
We are in the middle of a volunteer drive.  We recently signed up 42 volunteers, and call us greedy, but we are trying to get about a 100 volunteers so that each person is only called upon to help 1-2 times a year.  A few minutes, or an hour a year ... that's very manageable!

What does the volunteer do?
It depends.  Your choice:  make calls, make food, donate gift cards.  We have 4 kinds of volunteers; when you sign up you pick if you are a cook or not:
A.  Muffin angels:  involves a call and delivering muffins
B.  Casserole angels:  involves a call and delivering a casserole or soup or ??
C.  Gift card angels:  involves no calling; you give the church office a check made
out to CUMC for any amount of money to be used for a gift card to help someone
out.  Write 'UMC We Care' on the memo line of the check please.  We use these
for people who perhaps aren't wishing to have visitors, or have meals for now but
will have needs later.  We buy the Gift Cards from the Youth Program in the
church, so it benefits them as well.  As we heard one member say, "I cook a
     really good gift card!"
D.  Anything angels:  You'll do any of the above, or ??? within reason of course!

The 'callers' call the member and show their concern and interest by asking how they are doing ...  You offer food, or ask what they need.  The 'We Care' Committee is available to support all volunteers.
All deliveries of food should be in containers that don't need to be returned, as a consideration.

How do you pick the volunteer to go with the person or family?
We match up location and / or situation.  For instance, we try to match up someone that lives within a few miles of the volunteer for that personal connection and ease, and if we can we find someone who has been in a similar situation who can help in other ways that's always helpful too.

How many people have you helped since the first of the year?
We have contacted and/or helped 46 persons/families in the first 2-1/2 months of this year.

Now, again, WHY should I volunteer ??
Because we all should care for and help each other.
And, because it's fun, easy, and feels good!!

Thanks for your consideration in being a volunteer!
And let us know if there is someone we can help.
